Piedra del Sol, or Stone of the Sun, a gladiatorial sacrificial altar or temalacatl, with relief of Xiuhtecuhtli emerging from the earth hole, holding human hearts, with tongue as a sacrificial knife, Mexica, Aztec, from Teotihuacan, in the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, or National Museum of Anthropology, in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City, Mexico. On the left is a statue of Coatlicue, goddess with serpent skirt and mask with turquoise and shell, from Cozcatlan, Tehuacan Valley, Puebla. On the right is a statue of a young god, possibly Huitzilopochtli, son of Coatlicue, possibly originally carrying xiuhcoatl the turquoise serpent, in polychrome tuff. At the bottom is a diorite sculpture of the head of the goddess Coyolxauhquia, wearing nose ring and ear ornaments with feather headdress and bells on her cheeks. Picture by Manuel Cohen
