Sculpture, Narbo Via museum, Narbonne

Bucranium, a Roman frieze fragment, with relief of garlands and sacrificial ox skull, marble, late 1st century BC, at the Narbo Via archaeological museum, designed by Norman Foster, opened May 2021, in Narbonne, Aude, Occitania, France. Bucrania were carved from the time of Augustus, celebrating the sacrifice of oxen during religious ceremonies and the garlands which adorned the monuments. The block was subsequently reused and on the rear is a relief of the coats of arms of the consuls of Narbonne. The museum houses the collection of the former Musee Lapidaire. Picture by Manuel Cohen
