Urfa Man, life-size sandstone statue of a man, c. 9, 000 BC, the oldest known life-sized statue in the world, excavated 1990s below the Old City of Urfa near Balikligol, a neolithic Pre-Pottery settlement, in Sanliurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museums, or Sanliurfa Museum, in Sanliurfa, or Urfa, Turkey. Urfa Man is 1.8m tall with inlaid black obsidian eyes, hands folded, wearing only a carved necklace. In ancient times Urfa was the city of Edessa in Upper Mesopotamia, founded in Hellenistic times an an important city throughout the Roman period. Picture by Manuel Cohen
