Sculpted limestone totem pole, 1.92m tall, from Gobekli Tepe, a Pre-Pottery neolithic settlement, c. 10, 000-6, 500 BC, Mesopotamian, excavated 2010, in Sanliurfa Archaeology and Mosaic Museums, or Sanliurfa Museum, in Sanliurfa, or Urfa, Turkey. The sculptures on the pole depict a bear or large animal holding a human head and a second human possibly giving birth. In ancient times Urfa was the city of Edessa in Upper Mesopotamia, founded in Hellenistic times an an important city throughout the Roman period. Picture by Manuel Cohen
