Model of a frame from the Oseberg Ship, whose planks were lashed to the frames using baleen, then secured with iron rivets, with wool placed between the planks to seal the hull, in the Slottsfjells Museum, Tonsberg, Vestfold, Norway. The Oseberg Ship or Osebergskipet is a 9th century karve type clinker built ship in oak, now housed in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, excavated 1904 from the royal burial mound at Oseberg, in the Slagen valley, near Tonsberg. The ship was buried in a grave, c. 834, of 2 wealthy women, 1 of whom is thought to be queen Alvhild, along with luxurious furniture, tools, a cart and decorative textiles. Picture by Manuel Cohen
