Plan of the Gokstad Ship, a 9th century clinker built oak Viking ship, which is exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, excavated from the Gokstad burial mound, or King's mound, at Gokstad farm, Sadefjord, Vestfold, in the Slottsfjells Museum, Tonsberg, Norway. The ship was discovered in 1880 by farmers, along with 3 smaller boats, many grave objects, animal skeletons and the remains of a man. Excavations revealed the grave, 895-903, of a Viking chieftain, thought to be Olaf Geirstad-Alf, inside the Gokstad Ship. Picture by Manuel Cohen
