Ship Setting, Gannarve, Gotland, Sweden
Gannarve Ship Setting, a boat shaped grave with standing stones forming the outline of a ship, 29m long and 5m wide, reconstructed, late Bronze Age, 1100-500 BC, at Gannarve, Frojel parish, on the island of Gotland, Sweden. There were originally 2 boat graves on this site. One grave has been destroyed and this one was reconstructed in 1959 from found stones, only the 2 end stones having survived in situ. Cremated bones and grave goods were placed in an urn and positioned within or beside the grave. The ship setting is thought to represent the journey to the afterlife. Picture by Manuel Cohen
