Ship Settings, Anundshog, Sweden

Anundshog Ship Settings, boat shaped graves with standing stones forming the outline of a ship, at Anundshog, Vasteras, Vastmanland, Sweden. Cremated bones and grave goods were placed in an urn and positioned within or beside the grave. There are 5 ship graves at Anundshog, 4 of which have been reconstructed. The ship setting is thought to represent the journey to the afterlife. The area was an important trade centre from the Iron Age, and the site contains 12 burial mounds, graves, ship settings, runestones and settlements. Picture by Manuel Cohen
