Sculptural detail of the apostles sleeping while Jesus prays in the Garden of Olives, from the Paixao de Cristo or Passion of Christ, 1530-40, by Joao de Ruao, 1480-1580, on the predella of the altarpiece in the Mosteiro de Celas, in the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, Coimbra, Portugal. The museum was opened in 1913 and renovated 2004-2012. The city of Coimbra dates back to Roman times and was the capital of Portugal from 1131 to 1255.
