Spanish Synagogue, Venice, Italy
Spanish Synagogue of Venice, or Scola Ponentina o Spagnola, founded 1555, Campo delle Scole, in the Jewish ghetto area of Venice, Italy. The synagogue was founded by Jews expelled from Spain in the 1490s who reached Venice in the 1550s. The 4-storey yellow building was designed by Baldassare Longhena and restored in 1635. The city of Venice is an archipelago of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges, in the Venetian Lagoon. The historical centre of Venice is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
