Spanish Synagogue, Venice, Italy
Spanish Synagogue or Scola Spagnola, built 1550 for Spanish and Portuguese Jews, and rebuilt in 1654, with sculpted painted wooden ceiling, chandeliers and gallery for women, in the Jewish Ghetto or Ghetto Vecchio in Venice, Veneto, Italy. The Venetian Ghetto was instituted in 1516 by Doge Leonardo Loredan and Jewish segregation here ended in 1797. The historical centre of Venice is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
