The martyrdom of St Maurice and his companions, fresco, c. 1822, by Auguste Vinchon, 1789-1855, in the Chapelle de Sainte Jeanne d'Arc or the Chapel of St Joan Of Arc, in the church of Saint-Sulpice, built 1646-1870, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, France. St Maurice was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century AD, a Christian legion who were executed and thus martyred by Maximian. Picture by Manuel Cohen
