Staircase of honour, Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau
Staircase of honour, with ceiling sculpted in boxes containing medallion portraits, 16th century, in the Chateau d'Azay-le-Rideau, a Renaissance chateau built 1515-27 by Gilles Berthelot on the foundations of an 11th century fortress, Loire Valley, Indre-et-Loire, France. It is built in both Italian and French styles on an island in the Indre river, and is one of the earliest French Renaissance chateaux. It is listed as a historic monument and is part of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
