: Statue, Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe

Statue, Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe

Colossal male statue fragments, 3m high, clay, late 6th - early 5th century BC, late Cypro-Archaic Il period, from the sanctuary at Polis-Maratheri, at the Archaeological Museum of Marion-Arsinoe, at Polis Chrysochous, Cyprus. The statue was a votive gift in a temple dedicated to Zeus and Aphrodite, later destroyed by the soldiers of Ptolemy, and now partially reconstructed. The clay sections were fired and fixed together with leather straps. The museum houses artefacts from the ancient city of Marion, renamed Arsinoe in 3rd century BC. Picture by Manuel Cohen
