St John the Baptist, bronze statue by Ivan Mestrevic, 1883-1962, in the Baptistery, converted 7th century AD from the former Temple of Jupiter, in Diocletian's Palace, built late 3rd century AD as palace, fortress and military garrison for Roman emperor Diocletian, in the old town of Split, Croatia. Split was founded as a Greek colony in 3rd century BC, was the seat of Roman emperor Diocletian from 305 AD and was later ruled by Byzantines, Venetians and Dalmatians.
