Modern statue of Galen, Roman physician, c. 129-216 AD, in Bergama, Izmir, Turkey. Galen is holding a book and next to him is a spiral fluted column with a serpent coiled around it, possibly representing the Rod of Asclepius. Commonly known as Galen of Pergamon, Galen was the founder of experimental medicine, anatomy, physiology and sports medicine. He was also the first physician who composed drugs by mixing crops and combining several active substances known as Galen medicines. Pharmaceutical courses still refer to Galenic Pharmacy. While being the private physician of 3 Roman emperors including Marcus Aurelius, Galen was also a great philosopher. Picture by Manuel Cohen
