Statue, Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya Empuries
Statue of Asklepios, god of medicine, Greek, 2nd century BC, with bust in Paros marble and body in Pentellic marble from Attica, in the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, or Archaeology Museum of Catalonia Empuries, an archaeology museum housing artefacts excavated at Empuries, in L'Escala, on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain. The statue was discovered in 1909 inside a large cistern in front of the Asklepieion and a copy now stands in the temple. Empuries is an ancient settlement founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea, settled by the Romans from 218 BC and abandoned in the Middle Ages.
