Sunken Patio, Monte Alban, Oaxaca, Mexico

View from the pyramid of the North Platform, built from 200 BC, with Sunken Patio or Patio Hundido, used by the ruling elite for religious and social ceremonies, at Monte Alban, ancient Zapotec capital founded 6th century BC, Oaxaca, Mexico. The sunken patio is hidden from view from the Main Plaza and was last renovated 500-800 AD. The north platform housed the homes of the royal family and elite ceremonial area with temples and a sunken patio. The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
