Synagogue inscription - Palais-Musee des Archeveques
Hebrew inscription on a marble cartouche from a synagogue in Narbonne, 1239-40, in the Palais-Musee des Archeveques de Narbonne, in Narbonne, Aude, Occitania, France. The reverse holds a decorative carved frieze. Jews from Baghdad were invited to settle in Narbonne by Pepin the Short in the 8th century, and a Jewish centre of learning was established in the city. The Palais des Archeveques or Archbishop's Palace, built 12th - 14th century, now houses the city hall and museums and is listed as a historic monument. Picture by Manuel Cohen
