: Syracuse. Detail of the bust of a female sculpture

Syracuse

Detail of the bust of a female sculpture, Fontana Diana, Giulio Moschetti, 1906, on Piazza Archimede in Ortigia, Syracuse, Sicily, pictured on September 13, 2009, in the morning. The Diana Fountain is the centre of the Piazza Archimede in Ortigia, the historic centre of Syracuse. It tells the mythological story of Diana transforming the nymph Arethusa into a spring on a site in Ortigia. Ortigia is one of the names associated with the goddess Artemis, the Romans identified her as Diana. The Piazza is named after the ingenious greek mathematician and philosopher Archimede who died defending Syracuse against the Romans. Today the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
