Fresco with a temple, stoa or covered colonnaded walkway, jetty and boat, on a wall in the garden of the Casa del Sacerdos Amandus, or House of the Priest Amandus, Pompeii, Italy. The fresco is in the Third Style of Roman wall painting, 20E10 BC, characterised by an ornamental elegance in figurative and colourful decoration. Pompeii is a Roman town which was destroyed and buried under 4-6 m of volcanic ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Buildings and artefacts were preserved in the ash and have been excavated and restored. Pompeii is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
