Temple of Satet, Abu, Elephantine island, Egypt

Temple of Satet, reconstructed section built by Mentuhotep II, 11th dynasty, c. 2025 BC, First Intermediate Period, at Abu, on Elephantine island in the river Nile, at Aswan, Egypt. The temple is dedicated to Satet, a Nile flood goddess, and was founded c. 3200 BC and enlarged and rebuilt several times. The island was important in the ivory trade from c. 3, 000 BC during the 1st dynasty, and was a defensive site above the First Cataract of the Nile at the border between Egypt and Nubia.
