Thing-hall, Ribe Viking Centre, Ribe, Denmark

Main hall in the Thing-hall, a reconstructed 30m long house belonging to a wealthy family, at Ribe Viking Centre, a reconstructed Viking village and living history site, at Ribe, Syddanmark, Jutland, Denmark. On the walls is a mural of the foundation of Ribe, painted 2010 on the 1300th town anniversary, using earth pigments mixed with chalk. The Thing was a council or assembly which met to resolve disputes democratically. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, founded c. 700 AD, was a Viking trade centre and had strong christian connections through archbishop Ansgar from 9th century. Picture by Manuel Cohen
