Tomb effigies, Abbey church, Iona, Inner Hebrides, Scotland

Effigies on the tomb of George Douglas, 8th duke of Argyll, 1823-1900, and his wife Ina, marble, in the south transept of the medieval abbey church at Iona Abbey and Nunnery, on the island of Iona, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. The duke paid for the restoration of the church and donated it to the Church of Scotland on his death. Iona abbey was founded by the Celtic monk St Columba in 563 AD. A stone abbey was begun c. 800 AD and the Benedictine monastery and Augustinian nunnery were built in the 13th century. St Aidan was a monk here in the 7th century and the Book of Kells produced here. Picture by Manuel Cohen
