Tomb, Maeshowe chambered cairn, Stenness, Mainland, Orkney

South west wall of the main chamber of the tomb at Maeshowe, a Neolithic chambered cairn containing a monumental tomb, built c. 2800 BC, near Stenness on Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The tomb walls are constructed with huge sandstone slabs and 4 upright stones are built in to each corner. Side cells are built into the other 3 walls. There are runic inscriptions carved into the stones, made by the Norse who discovered the tomb in the 12th century. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
