Tomb sculpture, Abbaye de Fontenay
Seated monk reading the office of the dead, sculptural detail from the tomb of the knight Mello d'Epoisses, mid 14th century, in the transept of the Abbey church, built 1139-47, at the Abbaye de Fontenay, or Fontenay Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1119, in Romanesque style, at Marmagne, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France. The knight and his wife have tombs here, with sculpted effigies and canopies above the heads, and smaller figures of monks.
