Tomb sculpture, Abbaye de Fontenay
Recumbent effigies on the tomb of the knight Mello d'Epoisses and his wife, mid 14th century, in the transept of the Abbey church, built 1139-47, at the Abbaye de Fontenay, or Fontenay Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux in 1119, in Romanesque style, at Marmagne, Cote d'Or, Burgundy, France. The knight wears a helmet and chainmail, armour and a surcoat and has a sword and shield. The woman wears a surcoat and belt, with hands together in prayer.
