Tower, Broch of Gurness, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland
Entrance to the broch, at Broch of Gurness, an Iron Age village with broch tower surrounded by ramparts and ditches, built 500-200 BC, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The tower is formed by a double drystone wall and originally had 2 storeys and a thatched roof, with fireplaces and an underground water cistern. The settlement probably held around 14 houses for around 40 families, and is situated overlooking Eynhallow Sound to defend against invaders, along with many other brochs. It was later inhabited by Picts and Vikings. Picture by Manuel Cohen
