Trelleborg ring fortress, Zealand, Denmark
Entrance to the inner Viking ring fortress or Trelleborg, built c. 980 under king Harald Bluetooth, near Slagelse on the island of Zealand, Denmark. The castle originally consisted of a central circular site surrounded by wooden ramparts with roads crossing in the centre leading to 4 gates, and a bailey outside the walls with its own rampart, and 16 longhouses. The site also holds the Trelleborg Museum of the Viking Age and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
