Trelleborg ring fortress, Zealand, Denmark
Viking ring fortress or Trelleborg, built c. 980 under king Harald Bluetooth, aerial view, near Slagelse on the island of Zealand, Denmark. The castle originally consisted of a central circular site surrounded by wooden ramparts with roads crossing in the centre leading to 4 gates, and a bailey outside the walls with its own rampart, and longhouses in boat shapes, seen here. The site also holds the Trelleborg Museum of the Viking Age and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
