Trelleborgen Ring Fortress, Trelleborg, Sweden
Circular ramparts of Trelleborgen Ring Fortress, a reconstruction of a Viking ring fortress built early 10th century and expanded c. 980s, at the Viking Museum Trelleborgen, at Trelleborg, Skane, Sweden. On the left is the west entrance gate. The circular fortress had a diameter of 144m and controlled the shipping routes south of Sweden. It was discovered in 1988, reconstructed in 1995, and now houses an open-air museum. Picture by Manuel Cohen
