Tunnel des Balitres, Chemin Walter Benjamin, Portbou
Portbou Rail Tunnel or Tunnel des Balitres, opened 1876-78, crossing the border from Cerbere in France to Portbou in Spain beneath the Coll del Belitres, at night, on the 13km Chemin Walter Benjamin, opened 2007, a footpath following the route taken by the German philosopher on 24th September 1940, from Banyuls to Portbou in Spain, while fleeing Nazism, Portbou, Catalonia, Spain. Benjamin was led by Resistance member Lisa Fittko to Portbou on the Spanish border, where he committed suicide for fear of being apprehended by Nazis. Picture by Manuel Cohen
