Tunnel des Balitres, Chemin Walter Benjamin, Portbou
Jean-Pierre Bonnel, founder of the Association Walter Benjamin Sans Frontieres, at Passages, or Walter Benjamin Memorial, inaugurated 1994, by Dani Karavan, featuring a corten steel entrance leading to steps down to the sea, commemorating the exiled, on the 13km Chemin Walter Benjamin, opened 2007, a footpath following the route taken by the German philosopher on 24th September 1940, from Banyuls to Portbou in Spain, while fleeing Nazism, Portbou, Catalonia, Spain. Benjamin was led by Resistance member Lisa Fittko to Portbou on the Spanish border, where he committed suicide for fear of being apprehended by Nazis. Picture by Manuel Cohen
