Tzompantli altar or Building B, with 240 stone sculptures of skulls, on the north patio, region of the dead, Stage 6, c. 1500, excavations at the Templo Mayor, Mexico City, Mexico. The Main Temple was a stepped pyramid temple topped with 2 shrines dedicated to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc, on the Recinto Sagrado or ceremonial area of Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Mexica people. It was rebuilt 7 times until it was destroyed by Hernan Cortes in 1521. Its remains have been excavated since 1978 and it is part of the Mexico City UNESCO World Heritage Site.
