General view of the bridge over the Adige River, Castelvecchio, 1354-79, Verona, Italy. The castle, built with its bridge, for Cangrande II, stands on the probable site of a Roman fortress. The fortified bridge was intended as an emergency escape route for the Scala family towards the Tyrol. The castle, where Napoleon stayed, was damaged during the Pasque Veronesi, Napoleonic Wars (1796-97). Castelvecchio was restored in 1923 and 1963-65. Picture by Manuel Cohen
