Vezelay Abbey church and part of the hill town of Vezelay, Yonne, Burgundy, France. Vezelay Abbey was a Benedictine and Cluniac monastery founded in the 9th century by St Badilo, who was said to have brought back relics of Mary Magdalene from the Holy Land. Here we see the Abbey Church or Basilica of St Mary Magdalene, a 12th century Burgundian Romanesque church. The building was extensively remodeled by Viollet-le-Duc 1840-61 to prevent collapse.
