This chief source of water for Ancient Corinth was remodelled by the Romans into a fountain complex, with Ionic colums which were added in the 3rd century AD.It is said to mark the spot where the nymph Peirene was turned into a spring by the tears she shed in mourning for her son. Corinth, founded in Neolithic times, was a major Ancient Greek city, until it was razed by the Romans in 146 BC. Rebuilt a century later it was destroyed by an earthquake in Byzantine times.
