Model of the Gokstad ship, excavated from a burial mound at Gokstad farm, Vestfold, in 1880, at the Bergen Maritime Museum, in Bergen, Vestland, Norway. The Gokstad Ship is a clinker built oak Viking ship built c. 890 AD, and the original is exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. It was used in a ship burial of an important chieftain who was buried with 3 small boats, 64 shields, tent, sledge and riding equipment. Picture by Manuel Cohen
