Viking ship reconstruction, Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde
On the left is Helge Ask, a reconstruction built 1991 of Skuldelev 5, a small longship or warship of the snekke type, c. 1030, in the harbour at the Viking Ship Museum, or Vikingeskibsmuseet, a maritime history and archaeology museum for prehistoric and medieval ships, at Roskilde, on the island of Zealand, Denmark. In the centre are Kraka Fyr, built 1998, and Skjoldungen, built 2010-12, reconstructions of Skuldelev 6, a rowing and sailing vessel used for fishing and whaling or seal hunting, built near Sognefjord in Norway, 1030. On the right is a new reconstruction of Roar Ege after the original built 1984 was retired in 2016, after Skuldelev 3, a small trading and transport ship, byrding type. 5 Skuldelev ships were excavated from the water at Peberrenden, Skuldelev, in 1962.
