Viking ship reconstruction, Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde

Building a new reconstruction of Skuldelev 5, using the same tools and methods as the Vikings, in the shipyard, at the Viking Ship Museum, or Vikingeskibsmuseet, a maritime history and archaeology museum for prehistoric and medieval ships, at Roskilde, on the island of Zealand, Denmark. Skuldelev 5 was a small longship or warship of the snekke type, c. 1030, partially made from recycled timber, with 13 pairs of oars for a crew of around 30. The original reconstruction was Helge Ask, built 1991. 5 Skuldelev ships were excavated from the water at Peberrenden, Skuldelev, in 1962. They are blockships, used to block sea invasions.
