Warrior grave, Birka, Bjorko island, Sweden
Square grave of the female Birka Viking Warrior, 10th century, at Birka, a Viking village founded c. 750 and abandoned c. 975, on Bjorko island in Lake Malaren, Sweden. The chamber tomb contains the skeleton of a female warrior buried dressed in silk decorated with silver thread, with sword, axe, spears, arrow, knife, shield, stirrups and 2 horses, in the style of a great warlord. It was discovered 1878 by Hjalmar Stolpe. Birka was a Viking trading post housing up to 1, 000 people and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture by Manuel Cohen
