Whalebone plaque, Orkney Museum, Kirkwall, Mainland, Orkney
Whalebone plaque, carved with 2 animal heads, excavated in 1991 from the Scar Viking boat burial on the Burgess peninsula on Sanday island, in the Orkney Museum at Kirkwall, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland. The clinker boat contained the bodies of an old woman, a young man and a young child, all from the same wealthy family, along with possessions such as a sword, brooch, comb, arrows, gaming pieces and clothes. The plaque was possibly used as a heated smoothing board for clothing. Picture by Manuel Cohen
