British troops resting in a disused quarry cave in the Aisne district of France. Most of the men when not actually in the trenches sleep and rest in these caves; they also form a mess-room for the officers. The floors are strewn with straw to give warmth... they also served as distribution centres; ammunition, food and water could be stored here
