Captain Leslie Cheape, polo player

Captain Leslie St. Clair Cheape (1882-1916), British soldier and polo player dubbed, England's greatest polo player'. He played for England in the Westchester Cup three times in 1911, 1913 and 1914. He was killed on 23 April 1916 while commanding a squadron of the Worcestershire Yeomanry in Egypt. Pictured in The Tatler in 1914, and described as a star performer who we hope is going to American with our team. Cheape did go and was pivotal in helping England win their historic victory over their American rivals in the International Polo Trophy (Westchester Cup), despite being impeded by broken cartilege in his nose after being hit by a ball during a practice game, and receiving the news of the death of his sister shortly beforehand in the Empress of Ireland disaster
