Checked knitted chess board vest, WW1
A British soldier proudly displaying a knitted vest under his jacket which, as well as eeping him warm, doubles as a portable chess and draughts board, at least according to The Sketch magazine in which this photograph is featured. I hope he kept that covered up when on the front line as, short of having a dart board on your chest, it's rather distinctive to snipers
