The Duchess of Roxburghe
The new Duchess of Roxburghe, wife of the 8th Duke and formerly Miss Mary (May) Goelet, daughter of Ogden Goelet, the famous American millionaire. May was an example of the dollar princess, wealthy American heiresses who married impoverished British peers exchanging their handsome dowries for a ducal title. Photographed here shortly after her marriage, which took place at on 10 November 1903 at St. Thomas's Church, New York. According to The Tatler, it was one of the most notable social events of the season and the wedding presents were said to have been worth £200, 000
