England and America polo teams, 1913

The British and American polo teams who played in the International Polo Trophy (Westchester Cup) in 1913. The American team were known as the Big Four and were J. M. Waterburyl, Lawrence Waterbury, H. P. Whitney and Mr Devereux Milburn. The England team were Captain Leslie St Clair Cheape, Captain Noel Edwards, Captain R. G. Ritson and Captain Vivian Lockett. The Americans won a narrow victory and the following year, England managed a famous victory against the USA a few months before the outbreak of the First World War. Captain Cheape, described here as a brilliant and powerful hitter was killed in action in Egypt in 1916 while in command of a squadron of the Worcestershire Yeomanry
