H.M.S.Duncan at gunnery practice
The naval arms race, primarily between Britain and Germany, of the early years of the 20th century, saw Britain seeking to stay ahead of the rapid growth of the German fleet. H.M.S. Duncan was commissioned in 1903, and assigned to the 6th Battle Squadron based in Portsmouth in 1913. Seen here at gunnery practice, she would be refitted at the outbreak of war
