Queuing to return home following the outbreak of World War I
Many British people were enjoying their summer holidays abroad when the war began and as the crisis became more acute, there was an eager rush for home. The British Embassy in Paris was besieged by people requiring passports and whilst many travellers made it home safely, other found themselves detained as prisoners in Germany
