Charles, Duke of Saxe Coburg and family

Charles Edward, Charlie, 2nd Duke of Albany and Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1884-1954) with his family around 1930; from left in front, Caroline Mathilde, Charles Edward, Victoria Adelheid, Friedrich Josias; (behind) Johann Leopold, Sibylla, Hubertus. Charles Edward was the posthumous son of Prince Leopold, and inherited the dukedom of Saxe-Coburg in 1899 when Alfred of Saxe-Coburg died. When hostilities broke out in 1914, Charlie, now a German prince, was in England with his mother and sister, and was forced to hurriedly resign his colonelcy in the Seaforth Highlanders. The family had made him a German prince and he had to fight for his country, but the British press and public hated him for it. Following World War I, in which Charlie had fought, he emerged with no reigning powers, but enough land to make him one of the wealthiest men in Germany. In 1935, he joined the Nazi party and dedicated himself to better relations with Britain through the Anglo-German Fellowship
